Innovations and Advantages

The Text Annotator is a web-based authoring program that allows faculty to add written notes, images (jpg, gif, bmp, png) audio files (aif, mp3, wav, avi) video clips (mgp, mpeg, wma) or links to other web sites to texts that students can access from a web browser. Texts in any language using the Roman alphabet can thus be adapted to a particular course, with glosses corresponding to both the specific context in which a word is used and the level of language appropriate for students. Author-instructors can modify or delete existing texts and annotations and can view the list of definitions for all texts for each of their courses. When preparing texts they have the option of giving students access to a printable glossary of all definitions and of underlining annotated words or leaving them unmarked. Users outside of Harvard University can obtain a module to install the program on a server, which must have access to an Oracle or MySQL database.
